Simon Bolivar was born the 24th day of July, 1783, in Venezuela. As a young child, his parents dies and left him a great deal of money. After traveling in Europe, Bolivar returned to Venezuela and joined the group which seized independance from Spain. Spain counterattacked and defeated Miranda. Boilivar commanded the defenses of the key port city but lost the battle after someone had let the attackers know of his plan. In December 1819, Simon Bolivar established the Republic of Colombia, which included New Grenada as well as Venezuela, and made himself President.  Two years later, actual freedom was from Spain was declared after the Battle of Carabobo.

I chose to research Simon Bolivar because after a bit of reading he just seemed like he was a strong man. He basically liberated an entire continent and did so with a small army.

  • Simon Bolivar's victories over the Spaniards won independence for Bolivia, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.
  • He is called El Liberator (The Liberator) and the "George Washington of South America."
  • After a meeting in 1822 with a great liberator, Bolivar became dictator of Peru.
